Codefarm expands to meet global banking demands for its evolutionary optimization solutions

9 February 2005

Dr Rob Shipman and Dr Patrick Mills appointed in key positions

Evolutionary computing specialist Codefarm has made two key appointments that will accelerate the company’s development of optimization products and solutions for international investment banks seeking to improve their portfolio risk management.

As Codefarm’s Operations Manager, Dr Rob Shipman will use his extensive experience in evolutionary computing technology deployment to streamline implementations for clients.

In the role of Senior Consultant, Dr Patrick Mills will use his practical knowledge of optimization in commercial environments to accelerate the development of Codefarm’s optimization solutions for its growing client list of global banks.

Codefarm is now the largest UK company dedicated to the commercialisation of evolutionary computing, a powerful technology that mimics the processes of biological evolution to provide solutions for highly complex numerical and combinatorial problems without needing to make unrealistic simplifying assumptions.

Dr Shipman moves to Codefarm from BT Exact, where he was senior research scientist in its future technologies group. With over eight years’ experience of technological transfer of evolutionary and adaptive systems to the commercial sector, Rob Shipman has a keen understanding of the issues surrounding the deployment of bio-inspired technology in business. Rob Shipman holds an Engineering Doctorate in Communications from University College London.

Dr Mills joins Codefarm from the University of Essex, where he was Senior Research Officer. During his eight years of developing evolutionary computing, Patrick Mills serviced blue chip clients such as BT and was part of an award-winning optimization toolkit development team (iOpt). He has extensive experience in developing constraint-handling algorithms and heuristic optimization.

The company’s growing team of evolutionary computing scientists has also been strengthened through the recent appointment of Elisabeth Guégan, who holds a Masters in Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems, and a BSc in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics.

Welcoming the new appointments, Managing Director Jeremy Mabbitt said: “Codefarm’s rapid organic growth has enabled us to make these appointments which will allow us to extend and enhance our portfolio optimization solutions, and accelerate their deployment to investment banks across the globe.”
