Distributed grid computing enables different parts of a program to run simultaneously on multiple computers that communicate with each other over a network.

Thousands of computations can take place in parallel, utilizing the
processing power in the most efficient way and with little or no
impact on performance.
In an externally hosted service like Galapagos, this is particularly
beneficial since users can enjoy the benefits of almost unlimited
processing power for a minimal cost. The cost is distributed amongst
the users as a whole, making this type of unbridled processing power
available to all organizations regardless of size and budget.
Codefarm currently uses the externally hosted grid computing services
of Hewlett Packard, with their high standards of security and maintenance,
to provide this facility for Galapagos.
